When I thought about it it was really sad how often things like this happen! Progress can be a really scary thing, it is so so good and really important. I think that there are quite a few reasons we do this. One of them might be because we realize we did something wrong and we use progress as an excuse so that we do not have to admit what we did.
We can stop doing this by remembering that it is okay to be wrong! And even better to admit that we are wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, we need to be honest and admit that, although we might have progressed it wasn't in the right direction. :)
"...religion has assumed the glory of having civilized the people; sciences, letters, arts, all the intellectual and moral pleasures, have claimed a share in this glory; and we have deemed it a praise and an honor to them when we have recognized this claim on their part."
What do you think most 'civilizes' the people out of anything else? I have my own opinion, I'd just like to hear others' opinions!!! :)
So with a lot of things it all needs to start with the individual, then branch out to the home, church, society, and on and on. So does civilization start with the individual? :D
I think that it does. But it's not who the individual is inside, but how the interact with the world around them. Civilization's main root word is Civ or Civil. In almost every other situation where those roots are used, the definition is clearly about the individual. I.e. CIvility-Quality of being civilized; the manner of a civil person; politeness; Civic-Relating to a citizen; as, a civic duty; Civil-Trained; refined; relating to citizens.
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself! Hopefully it's a good discussion tomorrow!
Here's mine: "Humility has been defined as the willingness to grow and learn. I believe that all civilized nations, societies, and people have to go through a period of humble growth. Access to knowledge is essential, and a lifestyle that permits this kind of learning makes it so more people can be civilized. In the end, however, a nation that holds themselves above knowledge, and is complacent and apathetic, will only atrophy into barbarianism. It is through hard work that an entity can become refined into civilization. Civilization is hard won intellectual growth."
Often times we re-define words. I have been seeing this A TON lately, usually this happens because we do not completely understand what the word means, so we re-define it in an easier and more shallow definition.Civilization is one of the words that most people don't wholly understand :)
It is also important to understand because we need to know it to apply it :D
Here's my quesions: What type of civilization do we live in today? What is the difference between sociaty and humanity? How can a sociaty have individual liberty, but also disorder and enequality?
How often do we justify our failures and sins in the name of progress? Why is it that we can do that? And what can we do today to stop doing that?

What is everyone's personal definition of Civilization? I have mine too, I just want to hear everyone else's, and hopefully expound mine. :)

This is mine (it's very simple):
DeleteCivilization is the state of a refined people; a people that are not natural or wild.
Why is it important to understand civilization?
