Note on the Great Books Readings

If you are new to reading from the Great Books set –
you may want to set yourself a time goal instead of a goal to finish the reading.

For example, you may choose to devote 20 minutes a day to reading the Plutarch article – looking up words and understanding what he has to say. You may just get through a few pages by the end of the week, but it would be better that you come to class having read and understood 4 pages than having read and not understood the entire 20 pages.

You are growing your brain like a muscle – so stretch yourself and work hard, but not to the point of frustration. When you feel you have reached your limit – push a little more – and then let yourself take a break. This will grow your brain much more than pushing through it in frustration.
