April Week 3: Cupid and Psyche by Apuleius

1. Watch:

2. Read:
  • Cupid and Psyche by Apuleius (Volume 3 pages 194-216) really, really soon so you have some time to think about it before class. Keep in mind that Cupid is symbolic of love and Psyche is symbolic of the human soul.
  • Four Kinds of Love (short article)

3. Explore: This site and learn about some themes and symbols in the story and the "hero's journey".

4. Write: As you read, write down what this story teaches about the nature of love (Cupid). Consider too - What destroys it? What builds it? We have been studying beauty - how is love related to beauty?

5. Question: Post a question below for us to consider.

  1. Is storge really such a thing? Is there such a thing as natural love that occurs between family members, or does all love still need to be developed and worked for?

  2. When we turn on our radios, chances are that the song we hear claims to be about love. From that we might assume that we live in a loving world. But what kind of love is our world filled with? And if Christ commanded us to love each other, what kind of love do we need to have in the world today?

  5. While I was reading Les Miserables, It talks about Javert and Fantine quite a bit. He seems to only ever have one true passion for his job as a police inspector. And she never really seemed to have anyone love her.... Which got me thinking..... Would it be better for someone to love but never have love reciprocated back to them (Fantine), or to not love at all (Javert)?

  6. Is the love Christ uses different from the four kinds of love the article mentions? Is Christ's love truly attainable in this life?
