1. Read
The Sacred Beetle by Henri Fabre - Volume 8 pages 94-96 and 105-119
I loved this reading! I hope you guys have as much fun as I did :-) (If you are reading it online - the link takes you to the entire book, just read chapter 1)
*if you have time you can also read A Laboratory of the Open Fields by the same author (pages 97-104).
2. Read Earth In the Beginning Chapter 6 - The Spirit Earth is Created
3. Write a favorite quote and discussion question below
This reading made me laugh! It was great! Here are my questions:
ReplyDeleteDo we ever hide greed under the cloak of charitable assistance?
Where did the "property means plunder" or "right is might" mentality originate?
In nature are there any real instances of creatures helping with the sure knowledge that they will get no personal gain in so doing?
My question was pretty much the same as Cassia's, and also How are others able to tell the difference when there is greed behind the charitable assistance?
DeleteOkay, here are my questions:
ReplyDelete1. Why did we read this? It was a little weird! :p
2. Quote: "...how is it that, when there are two of them, neither thinks of lending the other his back so as to raise him by that much and make it possible for him to go on working?" Is this the way we as humans are sometimes? Do you think we sometimes lose sight of what other people want or need, and are just selfish?
3. Quote: "When he is all alone in face of the difficulty, when he has no assistance, his dynamic operations remain absolutely the same; and his efforts to move his transfixed ball end in success, provided that we give him the indispensable support of a platform, built up little by little. If we deny him this succour, then, no longer encouraged by the contact of his beloved ball, he loses heart and sooner or later flies away, doubtless with many regrets, and disappears." I suppose this is more of a thought than a question, but... do you think that Christ is that platform?
And I also read 'A Laboratory of Open Fields', and I had a question from that: So, I thought that the guy was a little insane. Why was he talking to bugs, but writing to people?
And the 'Earth' reading was really great, also! ;) Here's my fav. quote from that one: "...when the Father "speaks" and is obeyed, that is another way of saying that the Only Begotten has executed that particular task." My question (it goes along w/ the quote): Where does the Holy Ghost come into this?
By the way, sorry I had so many! :P
DeleteAt first I was like, really? What is the point in reading this? But once I got a little ways into it it made sense, and I loved it! Great points! :)
ReplyDeleteSomething to think about is just to take this internally, in everyday situations. Do we only offer assistance with the expectation of reward? Or even as the beetles, outright robbery?! I think it's something that all of us are guilty of at one time or another, and just how important it is to check up on ourselves and make sure that we have pure motives in everything we do.
Mine goes with the quotes Cassia talks about, "Property means plunder" and, "right is might."
ReplyDeleteWhat is the principle being applied in these statements? Could it be a twisted form of the principle that as someone applies their time (or might, in this case) to something, it will become more theirs in proportion?
I had two:
ReplyDeleteIs it okay to rob someone of something they robbed?
Is everybody fending for himself bad if so why?
Well, my quote is...
ReplyDelete"The sacred Beetle does not stop there: She becomes a geometrician capable of solving a delicate problem of minimum values."
What kind of "Delicate Problems" do you deal with in your life?
